We swung by this National Natural Landmark on our way to see friends JJ & Jesse in Clinton, MS. We toured the site and finished just as a thunderstorm unleashed a torrent of rain.

This site boasts that it is the only petrified forest east of the Mississippi but if you have seen Arizona’s petrified forest you won’t be very impressed. I suspect the main reason is that Arizona’s artifacts are all exposed in the desert whereas here they are buried in hills and vegetation.

The self-guided tour pamphlet says that these petrified logs were discovered after poor farming practices caused massive erosion and exposed them as hillsides turned into ravines.
